While the power of the One Ring can be somewhat blamed for this unfortunate event this heinous act cannot be overlooked, especially when others with purer hearts were able to resist the ring's pull. However, when his friend and cousin Deagol found the One Ring while fishing, the ring's power quickly corrupted Smeagol's mind and heart, instilling an overwhelming desire for its power in him.Īfter asking nicely for the ring as a birthday present and being denied, Smeagol showed no hesitation in killing his friend and taking the ring for his own. Around half a millennium before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Smeagol was an early Hobbit-type creature with a seemingly kind heart. They fought over the ring and Sméagol bit Déagol's hand to get him to release it. Immediately, Sméagol felt the power of the Ring and demanded it of his cousin, who refused. Back then, he was known as Sméagol. He was a Stoor, an early type of Hobbit, and he lived with his family under a matriarchal house run by his grandmother.Īccording to Peter Jackson's film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, on one of Sméagol's birthdays, he and his cousin Déagol were out fishing on the river when Déagol found a mysterious gold ring at the bottom of the riverbed after being pulled into the water by a large fish. The plot of Lord of the Rings mainly revolves around Frodo having to throw an evil ring into a volcano called Mount Doom. But this was predicted 500 years before it ever happened when Gollum first came across the Ring.
He’s an often malicious, sneaky devil full. The way that Gollum takes the Ring from Frodo is particularly memorable because Frodo loses a finger in the process, a fairly gruesome fate for the Hobbit who ferried the most powerful Ring of Sauron across Middle-earth. Of all the characters in the Lord of the Rings who blur the lines between good and evil, Gollum is one of the most difficult for audiences to despise.
